Name: "Jack Daniel's Old No. 7"

Category: Liquors

Subcategory: Whiskey

Inventor: Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel

Producer: Jack Daniel Distillery

Production start: 1866 - Lynchburg, Tennessee, USA

Recipe: Made with corn, rye, barley malt and iron-free water from our limestone Cave Spring. Twice distilled, charcoal mellowed, matured to perfection in new, charred, white oak barrels on all levels of warehouses. Well-rounded and balanced whiskey with a pleasant mix of caramel, vanilla and wood notes highlighted by a slightly fruity aroma. Color: medium amber whiskey. Proof: 80 since 2002, including the black label, which had been 86 proof since 1987 and was 90 proof before that.

Interesting facts: Registered in 1866 by Jack Daniel, the Jack Daniel Distillery is the oldest registered distillery in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1866, Jack Daniel first bottled his Tennessee Whiskey in earthenware jugs with cork stoppers. To distinguish his whiskey from others, he began stenciling his name on the jugs, which became the first form of distillery advertising. By the late 1870s glass bottles were the common way to store whiskeys. Jack Daniel followed the standard round glass bottle and embosses with the distillery name. "Old No.7" appeared as Jack Daniel's product name in 1887. Everyone has a theory as to its origin; each theory is different, no one knows for sure. Jack Daniel's Black Label is the world-famous whiskey awarded seven international gold medals, including the one collected by Mr. Jack Daniel himself at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. It received highest honors then as the "world's best whiskey".

Released: August 23, 1999

Developer / Founder: Pyra Labs (founded by Evan Williams and Meg Hourihan, acquired by Google in 2003)

Place of develop: 350 Townsend Street, San Francisco, California, USA (Pyra Labs Headquarters)

Programming language: Python

Subdomain: .blogspot.com

Features: Blogger is a blog-publishing service that allows multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries. Generally, the blogs are hosted at a subdomain of blogspot.com. Blogs can also be hosted in the registered custom domain of the blogger (like www.example.com). So blogspot.com domain publishings will be redirected to the custom domain. Blogger cannot be installed on a web server. One has to use DNS facilities to redirect a custom URL to a blogspot domain. Blogger allows its users to choose from various templates and then customize them. Users may also choose to create their own templates using CSS.

Interesting facts: Blogger was developed by a tiny company in San Francisco called Pyra. Pyra was co-founded by Evan Williams, computer programmer and Internet entrepreneur, also co-founder of Twitter, and Meg Hourihan, Internet entrepreneur, also co-founder of Kinja news aggregator. The company's first product, also named "Pyra", was a web application which would combine a project manager, contact manager, and to-do list. In 1999, while still in beta, the rudiments of Pyra were repurposed into an in-house tool which became Blogger. The service was made available to the public on August 23, 1999. Much of this coding was done by Paul Bausch and Matthew Haughey. In February 2003 Blogger was acquired by Google.

Nickname: "Cigar"

Inventor: Alexandre "Sacha" Horowitz

Producer: Philips Company (founded by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik Philips on May 15, 1891, named "Norelco" in USA)

Alexandre Horowitz
Alexandre Horowitz
(Antwerp, Mar. 24, 1904 -
Switzerland, 1982),
the technical engineer
who invented the
Philips Philishave
Features: The first Philips Philishave - model 7730, which acquired the nickname "Cigar" - was of simple design. It had a Bakelite body, 3 bronze cutters which quickly became blunted and only shaved a small area of the face. These characteristics clearly reflect the properties of the first product phase. The first updated model 7736 "Philishave 6" in 1941 mainly improved on performance through adding 3 cutters, replacing the cutter material with steel, and adding an additional ring to tense the skin around the shaving head. Next model 7733 "Steelbeard" in 1946 has a larger shaving head. These improvements reduced both shaving time and skin irritation. The main production methods rely on early injection molding techniques.

Interesting facts: Philishave Type 7730 was developed by the technical engineer Alexandre Horowitz and the first product was manufactured on March 9, 1939. Only five days later, the first six products in the Philishave family were presented to the general public at a trade fair in Utrecht, Netherlands. By 1940, 12,000 shavers had been manufactured. In the following years Philips set up a dealer network and trained salesmen in selling electric shavers, which all added to the success of the 7733 "Staalbaard" (Steelbeard) Philishave. Philips used the Philishave brand name for their shavers from 1939 to 2006; from March 2006, all Philishave products will be rebranded with the Philips brand name.

Ray Kroc
Raymond "Ray" Kroc
(Oak Park, Oct. 5, 1902 -
San Diego, Jan. 14, 1984)
the American businessman
who founded the
McDonald's Corporation
Features: McDonald's original restaurant in California served only hot dogs, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, milkshakes, and the original pre-1960s type of French fries. Today's menu includes numerous other items that have been added through the years. Most standalone McDonald's restaurants offer both counter service and drive-through service, with indoor and sometimes outdoor seating.

Interesting facts: In 1937 Patrick McDonald opens a food and drinks stand called "The Airdrome" on historic Route 66 (now Huntington Drive) near the Monrovia Airport in Monrovia, California, with Hot dogs being the first item sold. In 1940 his sons Richard and Maurice move the building 40 miles (64 km) east to San Bernardino, California, where they open the first McDonald's restaurant, near U.S. Route 66, at West 14th St. and 1398 North E St., on May 15. Its menu consisted of 25 items, mostly barbecue. As was common at the time, they employed around 20 carhops. It became a popular and highly profitable teen hangout. In 1948, after noticing that almost all of their profits came from hamburgers, the brothers closed the restaurant for several months to remodel it and implement their innovative "Speedee Service System", a streamlined assembly line for hamburgers. The carhops are fired, and when the restaurant reopens it sells only hamburgers, milkshakes, and french fries. At 15 cents, the burgers are about half as expensive as at standard diners, and they are served immediately. The restaurant is extremely successful, and its fame spreads by word of mouth. In 1954, entrepreneur and milkshake-mixer salesman Ray Kroc becomes fascinated by the McDonald's restaurant during a sales visit, when he learns of its extraordinary capacity and popularity. Kroc approaches the McDonald brothers, who have already begun franchising, with a proposition to let him franchise McDonald's restaurants outside the company's home base of California and Arizona, with himself as the first franchisee. On March 2, 1955, Ray Kroc founds "McDonald's Systems, Inc." as a legal structure for his planned franchises. On April 15, Kroc opens the ninth McDonald's restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. In the following years, Kroc sought franchisees for his McDonald's chain: by 1958, there were 34 restaurants; in 1959, Kroc opened 68 new restaurants, bringing the total to 102 locations; in 2012 McDonald's operates over 35,000 restaurants worldwide.
